Recommendations - 2010
This is the first time I get around to writing a recap of the year in the form of recommendations. Some of the things are not from 2010 but I got to know/use them for the first time this year. I hope it is useful to some.

My pre-review of Sam Harris' "The Moral Landscape"
So, Sam Harris is coming out with a new book titled "The Moral Landscape." You can learn more about it here. I have not read it – it comes out tomorrow – but I've found that every time he talks about his idea about a moral landscape he has to explain why he thinks that science can and should be involved in morality. This is a good question on its own, but what bothers me is that this question is never asked to all the other institutions that claim that they can define morality.

About that Don't Ask Don't Tell bullshit.
So, you trust those in the military to risk their lives in Afghanistan. Watching for IEDs and snipers. Sleep deprived and knowing that it was just yesterday that one in their unit was hit. Stress as high as the temperature. Going from bunker to armored truck to bunker. Looking for the bad guys, who look exactly like the good guys that you are trying to build relationships with...

Is America ready for a black president?
We thought we answered that one when America elected Barack Obama as the next president of the United States, right? I mean, of course it is! Barack Obama got elected!

Apple, FaceTime is awesome, may I suggest TalkTime?
FaceTime is truly awesome and I find myself wishing that everyone in my family had an iPhone 4, but part of what is so great about FaceTime is the fact that once you start it, it takes the call to WiFi, and at that point, the chance of AT&T dropping your call vanishes.

State of Play
Good screenplay, mediocre performances, bad casting.

Capitalism: A Love Story
Not Michael Moore's best. A bit disjointed and quick to make conclusions that are now proven wrong (we are seeing how Obama is far from that progressive man we thought he was).
Thicker Than Water
Not good. I love Jack Johnson's music, but there is not much of anything here.

Love for soccer is growing in the US.
According to this press release, president Obama called the US team and "told them that while he was meeting with General Petraeus in the Oval Office, he could hear the rest of the West Wing erupt when Landon Donovan scored the game winner."

Although it begins as a mix of many clichés, the story quickly takes turns that make it unique and captivating. Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey's performances are good but not remarkable.

My thoughts on "Lost" finale - Spoilers.
First of all, I want to say that I enjoyed the ride. I liked most of the episodes of the whole series, with the exception of Season 3. I kept telling myself that there were answers to all of these questions that kept arising.

5 de Mayo
It seems to me that most Mexicans celebrate 5 de Mayo by telling everyone else that no one in Mexico celebrates 5 de Mayo because it is not the anniversary of Mexico's Independence. Everyone else celebrates 5 de Mayo by drinking beer and eating Mexican food (or food that resembles it). And I have never heard a single non-Mexican person say that 5 de Mayo marks Mexico's Independence.

The movie has the same feel as 8 mile. The performances are acceptable but a bit forced. If you like Notorious B. I. G. I believe you'll like this film, otherwise, don't go out of your way to watch it.
I enjoyed watching it, but nothing in it was special.

Home Game: An Accidental Guide to Fatherhood by Michael Lewis
I'm about to become a father and so far these are the most honest words about fatherhood that I've encountered (at least they feel that way since I don't know for sure yet). Michael writes about the misery that comes with being a father while revealing, in a very raw and witty way, how satisfying it also is.

Stranger Than Fiction
It would have been a great movie had the writer made the right choice at the end. By not doing so, the writer is able to make a point that is valid but at a big price.

Like most of the documentaries made for IMAX around this time, it focuses on visuals more than anything else. As a result, you end up with beautiful shots of dolphins, but not much else.

A very theatrical movie that feels like a rehearsal. Slow paced, but not without good moments. Not Allen's best, but still enjoyable.
Re: HOW TO: Get the Most Out of the Boxee Beta
I'm thinking about canceling cable in favor of boxee. Does anyone knows if I can watch in-market games on MLB (specifically the Yankees, living in Manhattan)? if not, is there a way of making it work? / / Live sports are the only thing stopping me from making the switch.

Food Rules: An Eater's Manual by Michael Pollan
Most of what you'll find in this book is based on common sense. Sadly, common sense is not that common these days. This is a simple and fresh reminder of things about food and eating that people shouldn't have forgotten in the first place.

Be warned, it is bad. It can make you laugh a couple of times, but so can a few videos of cute kittens on YouTube.

I'm an atheist and I wanted to like this documentary, but I simply couldn't. Bill was not the best at presenting strong arguments and really challenging people. I appreciate the effort, but as a documentary it falls short.

The Business of Being Born
There is a lot of misinformation out there. This documentary does a good job presenting some valuable information about the options for giving birth. It lacks hard data and it feels a bit like the videos they play during birthing classes, but it is a good film to watch for anyone interested in the topic. I sure am. My midwife and the birthing center we will use are featured in the film.

Well acted and directed. Very theatrical. Just not my cup of tea. Slow and overly dramatic for my taste.

The World's Fastest Indian
Most feel-good movies feel as if they were made for TV. This one is no exception, but Hopkins' performance makes it special.

The movie itself is fantastic and everyone knows that. The added treat was seeing 70's New York in the background.

Shortening URL shorteners
Just an idea to keep shortening URL shorteners. We’ve gone from http://tinyurl.com to http://bit.ly to http://3.ly with many others in between. We’ve got rid of many unnecessary characters, but event the shortest ones require 12 characters (http://3.ly/). Getting rid of 6 of those would be easy. Getting rid of 8 or 9 possible but difficult. How? [...]

Re: Steve Jobs Gives His Blessing to Streaming Video iPhone App
I'll explain myself better. I do not think that an app that allows people to live stream videos while it allows multiple iPhone users to connect to that stream will show up anytime soon. I agree, a live upload to a server (Qik or Ustream) for them to distribute it on their website may come soon. An app that allows live streams to be downloaded and played in multiple devices, I don't think so.

Dealing with attention whores
How should the media treat the octomoms, the balloon boys, the White House crashers, etc.? The same way that the idiots who run to and on the field during a game are treated by the broadcasters. Just ignore them. Focus the cameras on something else, make some remarks about how stupid and inconvenient these people [...]
Re: Steve Jobs Gives His Blessing to Streaming Video iPhone App
My guess is that these apps got approved because only one phone receives the streaming. The number of people that could potentially connect to a Qik stream is much bigger and could break the network in no time. / These apps are cool, but let's not jump the gun here, one-to-many streaming is not happening soon.

Re: Obama Assassination Poll Rocks Facebook
There are over 30 death threats a day against the president. If you think this was just a joke, you are naive. If in addition to that, you find it funny (the joke and/or the reaction), you should be ashamed.

Joe Wilson should not non-apologize anymore. He should just call himself a liar.
People are missing the point in this whole Joe Wilson’s “You lie!” shout.
I believe that the only difference between bravery and stupidity is the result. Had President Obama been telling a lie when Joe Wilson shouted, he would be regarded as brave, not stupid and disrespectful.
Now, Joe Wilson says that he believes that his apology [...]

Common Sense Politics
Looking at the current state of politics in the US, I wonder: Where are the politicians who stand for my beliefs? All of my beliefs.

Climate protection. Nothing else will matter if we don’t change our ways radically. Now.

Sports and Politics
I think that people should put as much attention and passion to politics as they do to sports. We follow sports, look at charts, follow reports and demand results. Thankfully there is one person that has applied his baseball analytic skills to politics. The results are very insightful.

Maybe He Really Is Putting “Country First”
I am starting to believe that McCain really is putting the country first. Seriously.
